We built a walkway above the working scallop line so anyone can watch a whole shell become a packed product.
Most seafood plants are closed buildings. Ours has a viewing walkway built above the scallop production line — the Hotate Seizō Line Kanran Kairō — where visitors can follow the whole sequence: shells landed that morning brought into the plant, the adductor separated, the product graded, packed and frozen.
We did not build it for tourism. We built it because a buyer who has seen the line does not need to be convinced about the line. If you are sourcing from us, the fastest way to answer your questions is to stand above the answer.
Visits cover the scallop processing line and the large live-crab tanks, and can be combined with our direct shop and the robata restaurant on site. Groups are welcome by prior arrangement. For buyers, we can add a working session on grades, packing and terms in the same visit.
The Sea of Okhotsk is not an unlimited resource, and we are not neutral about that. Our scallop plant has been MSC certified since 2016, so product can be traced back to a fishery assessed as sustainable.
On the energy side, we have been reducing CO2 from the electricity and fuel our plants consume, and installing energy-saving equipment, on a continuing basis. In 2024 we added a self-consumption solar power system — panels across the roofs of the individual plant buildings, arranged for efficiency, and on wall surfaces where roof area ran out. It cuts both the crude oil burned to make our electricity and the carbon dioxide that comes with it.
Monbetsu's sea is what the company is built on. Protecting it is not a side project.
